Dave Sabben was born in Suva, Fiji in 1945. He came to Australia in 1958 to attend
Trinity Grammar School in Sydney as a boarder. He passed the Leaving Certificate in 1962 and entered the workforce.

Turning 20 in 1965, he was called up in the first intake of Australia’s National Service scheme. He applied for officer training and completed the first course of the Scheyville National Service Officer Training Unit (1OTU), graduating in December, 1965. |

In January 1966 he was posted to 6RAR at Enoggera in Brisbane
and was appointed platoon commander of 12 Platoon, Delta Company. The battalion was warned for service in Viet Nam in April 1966,
arriving in the war zone in June 1966. |

Dave served the full 12-month tour as
12 Platoon’s commander. |

Upon return to Australia he was discharged from his National Service obligation and resumed his earlier civilian occupation – as a layout artist with the advertising department of a large Sydney department store. |
| Married to Sue Birt, he lived in Gosford. They had two children – Rae and Garth. |
| The family moved to Wollongong in 1969 where Dave managed a weekly newspaper. In the mid 70’s, Dave
retrained and began a career in computer programming. |
| After a divorce in the late 70s, he moved to Melbourne. By the mid 80’s, he was managing computer projects,
and married Di Baron. They have lived in
Melbourne ever since. |
Dave retired from the IT industry in December 2004 in order to write.
The first project was to co-operate on the Long Tan by the Commanders book, which had started in the mid-90’s. In the late 90’s he started Through Enemy Eyes – his
"faction" novel of the enemy view of
the arrival and the first few months of the Australian Task Force at Nui Dat,
South Viet Nam - see the separate links on the website.
